New weapon, diagonal movement ability, Windows build and road ahead!
Hello everyone, thank you to everyone who played the last update! Here's a new update for you in time for Labor Day weekend.
- New weapon- Shockwave: I want to experiment with new weapon types and incorporate weapons which use more space in the grid. I also want players to be rewarded for planning their moves ahead and targeting larger kill combos. The first weapon I have incorporated is what I am tentatively calling the Shockwave. When you unlock it, it will immediately go into a cooldown mode waiting for you to complete the necessary number of turns before it initiates. Once it initiates, it will progressively move outwards from the location of the player (it doesn't move with the player) when the attack was initiated for a set number of waves. Unlocking more upgrades increases the number of waves the attack is sustained for. But at higher upgrade levels, the required cooldown turn count also increases. So use the shockwave wisely.
- Diagonal movement: I've also added an upgrade which lets you move in a diagonal direction. Currently, it is a single use upgrade and requires you to upgrade horizontal and vertical movement to Level 2. This will hopefully serve you well in sticky situations, but again, use it wisely
- Windows build: I've uploaded a Windows build as well this time to help you get around any web build issues.
- Road ahead: Below are some of the items that I am focusing on in the short term:
- Save-Load Functionality : Windows build save-load functionality to be included in the next upgrade
- Visual overhaul: My initial vision for the game's aesthetics was vapor-wave. In the time constraint of a 72 hour jam, I limited the visual polish to what I could get out as quickly as possible. Although I did change the enemy sprites in the last update, I am still not satisfied with the visuals. I will work on overhauling the visuals for the next update to align it more with what I initially had in my head. Also I've been playing a lot of Utopia Must Fall by PixelJam and this style feels so good. But I am not the greatest artist so this might take some time till I am really satisfied. Also, I am hoping that will attract more players.
- Meta progression: Still working through ideas for meta progression, including build types that are purely defensive, purely retroactive (i.e. initiate attacks based on previous positions not current positions) etc. Needs some cooking, but the game will never be released fully without meta progression (hold me to this)
On another note, I will be taking a vacation for the next couple of weeks without my computer. So don't expect this pace of updates for the next month :)
